FAQ

Questions

The basics

Why not just use a government ID?

An ID check shows who someone was once, which says little about who's typing now. Storing IDs invites breaches, and not everyone has one. ID is still an option: we keep only proof it was valid.

Why not CAPTCHAs or phone numbers?

Machines solve CAPTCHAs, and phone numbers are cheap in bulk. A vouch puts a real person's standing on the line.

Why not face or iris scans?

They need special hardware, and you can't replace your face if the data leaks.

Do I have to keep re-verifying?

No. Your pin doesn't expire. We only ask if something looks wrong, and a person reviews every appeal.

What if nobody can vouch for me?

Come to a table night or use a private ID check.

Privacy

What does mezein know about me?

Who vouched for you and who you vouched for.

What does a site learn about me?

That you're a person, plus a name only that site uses.

Does mezein read what I post?

No. Any checks on posts run on the platform's own servers, and your words never reach us.

Catching bots

How do you catch bots?

We use several signals. Any of them can start a review, and a person makes the final call.

Can someone sell their pin?

When a bot is caught, its voucher gets reviewed too, so selling a pin is risky.

Does mezein judge how I behave?

No. We only check that an account belongs to a person. Each site sets its own rules.
